The future on the screen
The cinema starts to represent the future with "Metropolis", dated 1926. Fritz Lang based his movie on Thea von Harbou second rate novel. His main concern was to create futuristic images, and the film caused such an impact on people, that after it no one has ever been able to produce something different from that. "Metropolis" sets were the materialization of Wells' ideas in "Story of the Time to Come" and "When the Sleeper Awakes". From that time onwards the basic idea is - technology rules life. Cities are huge factories and workers are a huge army. Bellamy saw the world exactly in the same way, however, with a different approach. Now, these cities and armies are symbols of horror, not of happiness and well-being. On the right you may find a list of futuristic movies. In the century that sees the future as a nightmare, the list confirms: 100% of the movies listed depict a gloomy future. The alternatives are: destruction, growth of the social abyss or anti-utopia.
